Is acid a bad idea for a blocked drain?
Yes, in almost every case. Drain acid attacks the blockage a little and the pipe, trap seals and your plumber's skin a lot. It is particularly bad in older buildings with cast-iron or galvanised drains. Mechanical clearing removes the material instead of partially dissolving it, and it does not leave a caustic pool in the trap for whoever opens it next.
Why does my kitchen sink block again a few months later?
Because rodding usually punches a channel through a grease layer rather than removing it, so the bore re-closes from the same starting point. Machine cleaning scrapes the wall of the pipe back to full diameter. If a line has blocked more than twice in a year, ask for the machine rather than the rod.
